Can creativity change the world?

Matt Comboy

“Was the Mona Lisa more influential? or was Leonardo Di Vinci?”

Matt Comboy is a creative thinker with many heads: one in design, one in innovation, one in strategy, and the other (occasionally) in the clouds. He has a passion for big ideas, sharp thinking and beautiful execution. When he's not creatively directing, he's taking direction from three small people, age 7 and 5, and 1. So Matt, can creativity change the world?

No.

What I mean is not on its own, not without its creator.

Creativity is a monumentally big word, it has forms, flavours, styles and roles, but they all have one constant – People.

Creativity is our very essence.

Was the Mona Lisa more influential? or was Leonardo Di Vinci?

There’s something special about encountering someone’s raw, passionate art. It can change the world.

No young boy likes to play the piano when they are 6 years old – not one. In the simple world of video games, school, dating girls for a day, and KFC at lunch time, there’s really no room for the “Sorry, I have piano lessons” excuse. You just don’t go there. That was me. And other than my family, no one knew about my relationship to the piano. That was, until I started to love it.

It wasn’t a healthy dose of school willpower or Bastien piano books that lit my fire. It was when I encountered another’s creativity. I attended a concert and saw a jazz pianist light up the ivories like fireworks. It was breathtaking. I was mesmerised. From that moment, I worked, and worked, and even worked a little more – practicing up to three hours a day and eventually studying music – following my father.

To this day, piano is a big part of my life. All because of one person’s pure, passionate creativity.

Creativity can change the world?… in the right hands.
