What’s more important, content or context?

Ernest Zacharevic

“Context doesn’t always imply a physical space…”

Ernest “ZACH” Zacharevic is a Lithuanian-born artist who combines fine art techniques with a passion for creating art outdoors. He uses oil painting, stencil and spray, installation and sculpture; working both inside and outside of the gallery space. Ernest’s work is noted for the clever and witty dynamic he creates between his art and the urban landscape it occupies – blurring the lines between the real world and an imagined one. A boy fishing for a submerged supermarket trolley, birds in a barbed wire nest, painted orangutangs in a real wheelbarrow – his art is beautifully executed, and intelligently placed. So Ernest, which is more important – the content, or the context?

They should compliment each other…

There needs to be a relationship between the two. No content is ever so universal that it can affect us without context. Context doesn’t always imply a physical space, we need to be able to categorise how and why it affects us for work to have an intrinsic value, some artists can generate entire careers out of an eye for context.
