How do you make people beautiful?

Edwin S Freyer

“others just look at me in a catatonic way”…

Born and raised in Canary Islands, Edwin's makes clean, delicate and natural photographs, focusing on portraiture and fashion.

His work has been featured in GQ, Elle, Drapers and the honestly titled ‘Fucking Young’.

I was on a shoot about a year ago and asked him to take a snap of me for a conference picture I needed. This was an off the cuff thing, and I am not easily confused with an oil painting, but he took probably my best picture since losing my hair and gaining a few chins. I looked half decent. So, Edwin, what’s the trick to making people beautiful?

First of all, is because I shoot beautiful people!

But beauty is such a huge and abstract meaning, so in terms of how, I just try to create a space where people can feel comfortable so they can be themselves as much as possible.

When people are respected, relaxed and “trust” in what you do, is where you can go deep and to search what you want from them in a natural way. I try to spend as much time as possible meeting, chatting and trying to find out who is in front of me rather than using them as a canvas where to create. They’re a very active part in what I do.

Sometimes people ask me what they need to do. Usually my answer is “be yourself” – at least there is a specific thing to do then. Sometimes they start dancing and jumping around – literally – and others just look at me in a catatonic way or do not know what to do. I like to work with this kind of energy, so maybe – just maybe – this helps to show people as beautiful as they are.
