Is food porn?

Patrice de Villiers

“Food is inherently sensual…”

Patrice de Villiers is one of the world’s most accomplished and awarded still life and food photographers. Her work is characterised by its originality, frequently arresting composition, and consistently surprising sensuality. She is the winner of 7 D&AD pencils (2 black, 2 yellow, 2 graphite, and 1 wood) and her striking work for Marcel’s provocative ‘Inglorious fruits and vegetables’ campaign for Intermarché in 2014 won no less than 58 awards globally.
In amongst the gongs & commercial work she took the love of food & photography to the world of music creating a personal project combining all three in images with all proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust.
I had the privilege of working with Patrice when I was a junior account manager at jkr, and it blew me away to see how high art could be extracted from a handful of lowly vegetables. Whenever I look at her work, I have the irresistible urge to pour a bucket of molten chocolate over my head and take a selfie. So, Patrice, is food porn?

In the right hands, yes…

Or perhaps erotic would be a better word with less obvious connotations.

Food is sensual by its very nature. It has visual, textural and visceral qualities. The image I create should lead to an emotive response based on any one of the above, or a combination of all three.

So stroke the endive with a bit of crafted lighting, hone in on it’s heroic qualities and it will perform.

I just have to capture that moment.
